Overview

The memorial is a domed peristyle Doric temple in a grove of trees in Washington’s West Potomac Park. It was dedicated by President Herbert Hoover in 1931 to honor Washington residents who served in World War I.



A list of Washingtonians who served in The Great War is preserved in the cornerstone. The base of the memorial is inscribed with the names of those who died. Significantly for the era, the names were placed regardless of race or gender.
